More and more tech giants are looking to make their services more secure. Mozilla has announced that it will be implementing authentication for Firefox accounts. This is an optional security feature that will require you to enter an authentication code after logging into your Firefox account.
The new two-step verification feature is based on the Time-based One-Time Password (TOTP) standard. Currently, the feature is available through Duo mobile, Google Authenticator, and Authy. Users will need to install these apps to receive the verification code.
How to set up two-factor authentication in Mozilla Firefox?
Mozilla has decided to roll out the feature gradually, so if you don't see two-factor authentication in your account settings, you can set it up manually by following these steps:
- To generate the verification code, you will need to download one of the following apps: Google Authenticator, Duo Mobile, or Authy 2-Factor Authentication.
- Go to “Preferences” from the menu in your browser and click on “Manage Account” under the “Firefox Account” panel. Click on the Two Step Authentication section. If the section is not visible, then you need to add “&showTwoStepAuthentication=true” to the page URL and reload it.
- Now, use the authenticator app you downloaded to click on the QR code. If you are unable to scan the code, you can click on Can't Scan Code to get the code manually.
- Enter the code in the “ Two Factor Authentication” section to log in to your account.
Users are advised to store the password in a safe place, to recover their account in case they lose access to the identity verification application.
Once you enable the feature, you will need to enter the code after entering your username and password every time you log in.
This move is particularly useful for users, as the Firefox account contains sensitive information, such as saved passwords and bookmarks.
