How to hide your name from the Windows 10 Lock Screen

The Windows 10 lock screen has received several updates thanks to the latest versions of Windows 10, including not only Windows Spotlight, which replaces the wallpaper with a new one on a daily basis, but also Cortana to activate the digital assistant without having to unlock the computer.

In terms of customization, the lock screen is rather limited and one of the things users can't change is the name that appears every time they're asked to enter their password.

Basically, this means that your own name appears on the lock screen without the option to turn it off. While for the majority of users, this is not a problem, some, especially when using computers in a public place, find it quite annoying.

Fortunately, there is an easy way to get rid of this problem, although only advanced users should resort to it because it involves using the Registry Editor. It doesn't take long to do, but to make sure nothing breaks, you should create a backup, which allows you to revert to your previous configuration with just a few clicks.

So let's get started. The first thing you need to do is launch the Registry Editor . Press Win + R and type regedit . Make sure you are logged in with an administrator account, otherwise you are not allowed to make changes to the Windows Registry Windows 10

In the Registry Editor complete the following path – you can do this either manually, by clicking on each folder or simply by copy-pasting the path into the address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software \Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Here, you need to look for an entry called dontdisplaylastusername and double-click on it. By default, it comes with a value of 0, so what you need to do is change this value to 1.Click on the OK button, but don’t close the Registry Editor yet, as there are other changes that need to be made.

On the right side of the window, right-click and go to New > DWORD (32-bit) Value where you are going to enable DontDisplayLockedUserID. Open this newly created item and instead of the value 1, which is set by default, you should enter the value 3.Click OK and now you can safely close the Registry Editor. Restart your system and the changes will be completed so the name will no longer appear on the screen.

If you want to revert to the previous configuration, you can delete the new registry key and enter the value 0 for the dontdisplaylastusername entry in the path mentioned above.
