Windows 10 KB4088782, KB4088787 for mobile devices released

Microsoft has released two cumulative updates for Windows 10 Mobile devices, but hasn't revealed many details about what they include.

First up, we have the cumulative update KB4088782 for Windows Phones. There is only one version in the list that is specifically for mobile devices and it addresses the issue where PDF files cannot be played in Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 phones.

There is also update KB4088787 for phones that haven't received the Creators Update.

This time, however, there are no details about the new elements of the update for phones, although the list includes improvements for the Microsoft Edge browser, which is available for both mobile devices and computers.

What's next for Windows phones?

While these updates might convince us that Windows 10 Mobile devices still have a future since they continue to receive patches, in reality they are only security fixes that come to address the vulnerabilities and bugs recently discovered by Microsoft.

Windows 10 Mobile has been put into maintenance mode, meaning the platform will not receive new features until it is fully retired, only security updates. The end of support for Windows 10 Mobile will be reached in mid-2019, when updates will stop being sent.

The future of Windows 10 on mobile devices appears to be the ARM version running on Qualcomm chips. Microsoft is reportedly working on a new mobile device codenamed Andromeda that uses a Snapdragon processor to run the full version of Windows 10.

Microsoft could release the new device sometime this year, but that remains to be seen in the near future.
