After the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s Rasbian, LibreELEC is the second Linux operating system and receives support for the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ single-board computer.
To celebrate the project's second anniversary, as well as international Pi Day, the team announced the release and immediate availability for download of the fourth maintenance update in the LibreELEC 8.2 "Krypton" series.
The LibreELEC 8.2.4 is released with new hardware support for the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ SBC to allow those planning to purchase the new development platform to enjoy its powerful features, such as the dual-band 802.11ac wireless card, Gigabit Ethernet via USB 2.0, and a Quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 1.4GHz processor.
Wi-Fi speed improvements were also evident on 2.4GHz networks, although Ethernet remains the number one choice for playing large media files on the Raspberry Pi. Despite the increase in CPU and RAM speed, the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B + SBC had normal operating temperatures during 1080p HEVC decoding.
Besides supporting the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ computer, LibreELEC 8.2.4 updates the Samba file and print sharing application to a newer version to address a critical bug and fix the LibreELEC settings to resolve an issue in size calculation that occurred when attempting to create a backup on external storage.
Regarding the main Samba bug, the LibreELEC team said it is unlikely that LibreELEC users are experiencing issues. With that in mind, it is recommended to update LibreELEC installations to version 8.2.4 as soon as possible. In the meantime, developers are focusing all their efforts on the next major release, LibreELEC 9.0.
