A new study conducted by Top10VPN reveals that Apple ID accounts are extremely valuable on the Dark Web, as they represent the most expensive, non-financial accounts that hackers trade on the dark websites of the internet.
Top10VPN, a company that provides VPN services, reveals that Apple IDs cost on average $15.39 each, and this is the highest price a buyer must pay to obtain an account that is not related to financial services.
On the other hand, the survey reports that PayPal credentials have the highest average selling price, with the price of each individual account reaching around $275 , while Western Union accounts becan purchased for “just” $101 . Debit cards typically sell for $67.50 , while credit cards are generally more “affordable” at $50 .
Microsoft accounts used to sign in to Skype cost less than $10, according to the report, making them a relatively inexpensive but powerful weapon in the hands of hackers, who use them to further spread malware, links to compromised websites or phishing links.
[su_heading]SCAMS PHISHING & DATA BREACHES[/su_heading]
Most of the accounts sold on the Dark Web have been obtained through organized phishing scams, with Apple IDs being a target of such malicious actions for some time.
The Fappening, which involved the leaking and publishing of private photos of celebrities, began after hackers managed to breach iCloud accounts and steal the accounts' corresponding Apple IDs, gaining access to the celebrities' photos stored in the cloud.
By default, iPhones are set to automatically upload photos taken by the camera to iCloud for backup purposes, and by gaining access to these accounts, hackers also obtain viewing and downloading rights to all photos.
It is obvious that there are numerous ways to protect against phishing scams, and the most basic of them is to never provide your credentials to websites without first checking whether they are legitimate or not. Additionally, enabling two-factor authentication will protect you even if your credentials are exposed in any way.
