The members of the national team that participated in this year's ECSC 2017 are, in alphabetical order, the following:
Gyftos Marios – Dimakis Fanis – Zacharioudakis Giannis – Kamarinakis Nikos – Kaplanelis Efstratios – Kolios Pavlos Kolios – Mantos Petros Lazaros Karolos – Touloumtzidis Lefteris – Tsekalas Giorgos David – Tsiboukis Anastasios
The competition is an initiative of the European Union Agency for Network and Information Security ENISA ), which acts as the centre of expertise on digital security for the European Union. Participating countries are represented by a single team, consisting of ten contestants, a coach and a judge.
The responsibility for the Greek participation in the competition lies with the Department of Digital Systems of the University of Piraeus. More specifically, led by the Department's Associate Professor Mr. Christos Xenakis, a specialized team of volunteers involved in the field of cybersecurity prepared the Greek participation in the pan-European competition ECSC 2017. This year's event was actively supported by the Ministry of Digital Policy, Telecommunications & Informationand the Greek Embassy in Spain.
The European Cyber Security Challenge was held between October 30 and November 3, 2017, in Malaga , Spain. Greece has been participating in the competition since 2016.
The Greek team was ranked 12th, down from the 1st place it held for most of the competition, after a generally problematic competition process in terms of organization (note: Spain was the organizing country).
The timeline of this year's competition
More specifically, the competition was delayed by over an hour due to technical problems. With the start of the competition process and while the technical problems had been partially resolved, the Greek participation started strongly, remaining in 1stplace for over 5 hours. Then, the competition platform collapsed, followed by a manual competition process, in which confusion prevailed, both in the distribution of the exercises among the 15 competing countries, and in the collection of the results. The distribution of the challenges was now done via USB memory sticks to each team separately. This process was considered flawed, as there was no central coordination and control of the distribution material. During this time, the scoreboards went out and the teams did not know their position as the jury was now recording the score manually.
After the completion of the European Cyber Security Challenge competition process , the Greek participation failed to achieve a high ranking and ultimately, after many consultations, took 12th place .
We call on all stakeholders to strengthen the national team in the following areas:
