The bad or slow Wi‑Fi connection is often something very annoying. Moreover, the low signal on the phone can be the cause of missing an important call or making our acquaintances worry.
However now a Kickstarter project wants to help so that we are always sure we will never again have to say the phrase “Sorry, I was offline” and to always have a reliable internet connection. Meet the Firefly, a phone case with an integrated super antenna.
The Firefly looks like a regular smartphone — according to the Kickstarter page, the shell is completely shock-absorbing and can prevent a cracked screen from a nearly 12-foot drop. Plus, its illuminated bezel glows in the dark.
Super Antenna technology patented aims to boost cellular data, Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, making charging faster (and reducing your urge to throw your phone out the window!). The idea is that you’ll be able to enjoy increased signal strength, larger coverage area and frequency‑bandwidth – meaning fewer dropped calls, faster streaming and non‑pixelated FaceTime calls, even in areas that usually have low connectivity. And when your phone isn’t constantly searching for service, your battery won’t run out so quickly.
The science behind Firefly: According to the Kickstarter campaign page, the case draws power from your iPhone and re-emits it with the best possible coverage. Because the antennas already built into your phone are narrow, they cover only a specific frequency, and when an external antenna is added (like the Antennagate for iPhone 4) the frequency shifts and the connection actually slows down even more. Since Firefly is a wide-band and wide-frequency case, these cancellation issues are obviously not a problem.
Firefly is available for iPhone 6/6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X, with prices starting at just $29.00. Plus, it’s shipping in April – just in time for your summer adventures in destinations without service. Learn more here.
