A team of researchers from the UK and India have developed an AI that can identify people using deep learning to enhance facial recognition capabilities, even when certain physical features are hidden.
What does this mean? You could be identified from surveillance footage and photos, regardless of whether you cover your face with a hat, scarf, glasses or beard.
The deep learning system examines 14 points on a face and measures the distances between them to identify people.
By training the AI with various datasets, the team was able to achieve a 56% success rate in identifying disguised individuals.
So it seems that this technology has not yet been perfected, as this success rate drops to 43% when the person wears glasses.
Tip: If you plan to attend a protest, it would be a good idea to wear glasses to protect your privacy.
The risk, as the paper states, is that such systems could be continuously improved and used by governments to identify dissenting citizens.
