Sometimes it's best to take matters into your own hands. That's what a group of Coachella festival goers thought when they realized their smartphones had been stolen. The thief, Reinaldo De Jesus Henao, from New York, managed to steal 100 phones during Coachella. It should be noted that the majority of the stolen items were iPhones.
A group of people who noticed iPhones had been stolen used the “Find my iPhone” app along with iCloud to locate their devices. Indeed, they were able to locate their smartphones along with Reinaldo De Jesus Henao who had over 100 stolen iOS and Android phones in his backpack.
The fact that many people gathered around a certain young man with a backpack was enough for the police to come and confirm that he was ultimately the one responsible for the major theft.
Some of the stolen smartphones were immediately returned to their owners, while the majority were returned to the Lost and Found service until their owners were found.
Essentially, the medals belong to Apple's "Find my iPhone" app that helped owners locate their devices, provided the app was physically enabled. The app allows users to see where their device is on a map, play a sound to locate it, or even activate Lost Mode to lock the device and remotely erase personal information.
Google's Android Device Manager works in a similar way, allowing Android device owners to locate the exact location of their smartphones in the event of loss or theft.
