The official announcement for the release of Ubuntu 17.04 LTS was made yesterday on the scheduled date, and many of you are looking to upgrade your system from previous versions of Canonical's operating system.
Let's look at the conditions
There are a few things you should do before upgrading Ubuntu. Before you begin, you should make a good backup of your important files and folders, and of course install all available updates.
To update the older version open the terminal and run the command:
sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade
Once you are finished with the update, we can proceed with upgrading your system.
You can upgrade to Ubuntu 17.04 in two ways:
By using the Updater application, or by using the command line.
Whichever way you choose to upgrade you will have the same end result: your system will be running Ubuntu 17.04.
To upgrade via the Updater app:
Open 'Software & Updates'
Select the 'Updates' tab
Where it says 'Notify me of a new Ubuntu version'
Select 'For any new version' in the dropdown menu
Ubuntu will notify you that a new version of Ubuntu is available.
This notification does not always appear immediately. You may have to wait because Ubuntu's servers are very busy.
If you don't want to wait, open the terminal and run the following command:
sudo do-release-upgrade
Read the details that will appear in the terminal and if you want to proceed, type y (yes) and press enter. Sit back and wait for the upgrade to finish.
