LG Electronics (LG) has received certification for its effective cybersecurity capabilities for the first time in the smart TV category from UL, the world’s leading safety and sustainability certification company.
Following in the footsteps of its expertise in 'smart' TVs, LG intends to further expand its level of capabilities by offering comprehensive smart home products, smart home security, and home automation services.
The UL 2900-1 Cybersecurity Assurance Program (CAP) examined webOS 3.5 Security Manager for potential vulnerabilities, vulnerabilities and weaknesses in the software as well as security controls that help protect users' private data.
UL evaluated the effectiveness of each security layer of webOS 3.5 by subjecting the software to a range of virtual network attacks – including the Top 25 CWE/SANS vulnerabilities – on its applications and system configuration center.
LG webOS 3.5's compliance with these categories provides the foundation for home IoT networks consisting of multiple connected home devices.
UL’s 2900-1 tests measure application security, information access control through authentication processes, and protection against software tampering and tampering. Additional information about UL 2900-1 standards can be found at the following link: https://standardscatalog.ul.com/standards/en/outline_2900-1_2. This is the industry’s first smart TV platform to receive UL 2900-1 certification, while LG webOS 3.5 has also been certified for its effective digital rights management capabilities in smart TV applications.
“Our webOS platform was built with safety in mind, so it’s encouraging to know that UL, a trusted name in safety testing and certification, agrees with us,” said JH Hwang, Head of R&D, LG Home Entertainment Company.
