Arab hackers altered the well-known subtitles website subtitles.gr and placed a video message of Arabic content!

An attack by an individual attacker or a group of Arab hackers took place a few hours ago on the subtitle website subtitles.gr. The hackers with the nickname General-c4 altered the website and simultaneously posted a message.
The website is one of the most well-known websites-sources for external subtitle downloads for movies and series. It includes daily updates in its database, with contributions from users-“translators”. Every visitor to the website through a particularly easy Interface can find Greek subtitles for almost every movie that is released!
Additionally, it is used as an external subtitle source for a large number of applications and software media centers such as Kodi and OpenELEC.

At the moment of the attack the website displayed the following content:

While the relevant video-Arabic message is published on Youtube and you can see it below:

The attackers, in addition to the subtitles.gr website, also altered the related websites, greek-subtitles.com and www.greeksubtitles.info, which were likely aliases (mirrors) of the subtitles.gr website.

The websites appear to be offline at this time and inaccessible.
There has been no announcement from the website about the attack and especially about whether the files that users download were affected.
It is worth noting that because the subtitles are distributed by the website in compressed file format (srt in ZIP usually) there is an increased risk that hackers (depending on their level of knowledge) will place malicious malware that will be distributed to visitors without the website's knowledge. Therefore, we estimate that users who have downloaded subtitles in the last hours/days should be particularly careful until there is an official announcement from the subtitles.gr website.
