There aren't many mobile games that can stand the test of time.
That's why many consider Tiny Wings, a difficult but infuriatingly addictive game that came years before Flappy Bird, one of the best games ever released for the iPhone. On Thursday, the developer of Tiny Wings gave its fans an early Christmas present with the game's first update in two years.
Even better, the update is quite significant: It adds five new levels to the “flight school” mode, where you can race other birds to the end of levels that are so difficult that anything better than last place is considered a “win.”
Also new: an Apple TV app, which requires a separate purchase of $2.99. Game developer Andreas Illiger has offered a preview, and it looks like it's well worth the investment for hardcore fans.
Finally, the update gave the game's graphics a much-needed boost supported by the higher-resolution displays of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus (remember, the game's last update was in August 2014, just before the iPhone 6 was released.)
Illiger released the first Tiny Wings in 2011, and the app soared to the top of the App Store charts shortly after – and has remained there despite infrequent updates. Some even argue that the lack of regular updates is why the game has managed to survive all these years. It’s simple but incredibly difficult to master and stars a cute little bird – clearly a recipe for its success on the App Store.
