Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently announced the company's new solar roof tiles and has now revealed that they are going to cost less than a regular roof.

Minutes after shareholders approved the deal—about 85 percent of them voted yes—Musk announced to the public that he had just returned from a meeting with his new solar engineering team. Tesla, he proclaimed, will actually cost less to build and install than a traditional roof, even before the savings on the electric bill. “The electricity,” Musk said, “is just a bonus.”
So far, he has not provided details about the exact cost of the new solar roof, but it is very likely that it will be announced as soon as possible.
The company's new tiles are obviously more expensive to manufacture, are significantly lighter and less fragile than regular tiles. This means that the shipping costs of the tiles could be significantly less than regular tiles and this is where the cost savings come from, as shipping costs are usually a significant cost in the overall price of the tiles.
