SpaceX plans to bring the internet to every part of the planet and everything starts in space.
The company founded by Elon Musk has just filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission that defines its vision for the use of thousands of satellites in orbit that will transmit internet signals to Earth.
"The system is designed to provide a broad range of broadband communications and services for residential, commercial, institutional, government and professional purposes around the world," SpaceX said.
Overall, the scheme will consist of 4.425 satellites in various orbits and will cost about 10 billion $, according to the estimates made by Musk in 2015.
The deployment will start with 800 satellites initially, although it is not clear when it will start.
«When fully developed, the SpaceX system will pass over almost all parts of the Earth's surface and therefore initially will have the capability to provide internet on a global scale», SpaceX said.
This is not the first time SpaceX has made such a plan. Musk has spoken about the satellite system many times, saying he would like to use it to fund a city on Mars, according to the Seattle Times.
SpaceX is also not the only one with ambitions for internet from space. The company OneWeb hopes to launch a constellation of 648 satellites to deliver internet worldwide.
Boeing also hopes to create a satellite internet system sometime.
Facebook also has the same goal, but the social network experienced a delay due to a SpaceX rocket explosion. The accident destroyed a Facebook satellite that it was going to use to provide internet to parts of sub-Saharan Africa.
SpaceX estimates that its satellites will fly into space again before the end of the year.
