They lurk in the shadows of the Internet: stalkers! You often discover them when they like a post you made on Facebook two years ago, which means they have really combed your timeline. They also follow you on Instagram and Twitter. You may know them well, only vaguely, or not at all.
The person watching you may or may not be completely harmless… Who knows why these people watch the lives of others?
Let's answer the big question:
How can I hide from online stalkers? Is there anything I can do about them?
Facebook Stalkers:
Social media sites like Facebook are a stalker's delight. Facebook lets them see your thoughts, photos and videos, and in many cases your current and past locations. What more could they want?
If you want to reduce the amount of information someone can see about you, follow the tips below
- Don't share your address, phone number, or email
This may seem silly, but there are a lot of people out there who share their personal information on their Facebook profiles. Your address, phone number, and email are all very sensitive information. You should leave this information completely out of your profile. The people closest to you already know this information, and others can ask you through the option that Facebook gives them.
- Hide your likes
A stalker may rely on a common interest or may be able to track you down if they know what places you like (i.e. bars, restaurants, shops, etc.) Each "like" you make can also give them something to use to gain a relationship with you or track you down.
- Hide all old information that may be publicly visible
You may not have always had restrictive privacy settings. In the early years of using Facebook, it makes sense that you weren't as suspicious about what you posted publicly, so make sure you have "limited availability of older posts" selected in your settings.
- Your future posts should not be public.
We reiterate that it is extremely important to know who sees your posts.
- Hide your friends list
It is a very important setting as it prevents stalkers from being able to see your friends list, that is, your closest people.
