Instagram confirmed today that it will release a live streaming app. It was a matter of time. In an interview with the Financial Times, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom said:
“Live is really exciting for us. I think it can enhance what we do. If I want to strengthen relationships with someone I love, streaming video is an amazing way to be closer to them.”
At the moment, no one knows when we'll see the new feature, but previously leaked images show that streams will appear in the Stories carousel. Check out the leaked image below:
This particular feature is another way Instagram is using to differentiate itself from Snapchat after copying Stories, but also a way to improve its services with additional features.
Of course, no one knows if Instagram stream will work with Facebook. How? When you post an image to Instagram, it will also post to Facebook by default, but not the other way around.
Instagram could promote any live video to Facebook or vice versa, but there is currently no report to suggest this.
In any case, live videos seem to be a natural extension of the app.
