Project Ara is one of Google and concerns the mass sale of modular smartphones on the market. Unfortunately, for the time being, the idea has been abandoned due to the lack of technological innovations that would allow manufacturers to carry out their mass production.
Last spring, Google stated that modular smartphones would be available to developers by the fall, while the first smartphone would be officially released sometime in 2017. However, in September, the giant suspended work on Project Ara, so we can't expect a release of modular smartphones for the time being.
According to statements from Phandroid who have tested modular smartphones, this is an innovative device that sooner or later developers will get their hands on.
The only thing for sure is that the phone doesn't invest in elegance. It measures 152 x 74 x 12.5mm (without camera) which makes it quite thick for a mobile device. It also weighs 190g (including the battery) so it's quite heavy.
Taking a look at the technical characteristics of the device, we have listed the following:
It features a 2.1-megapixel rear camera with a fixed focus lens and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor with 3GB of RAM . Additionally, it features a 5.46-inch display with full HD (1080p) resolution and packs 32GB of storage. It also includes a 3.5mm audio jack and USB Type-C ports , along with a generous 3450 mAh battery. Surprisingly, the modular smartphone runs Android 7.0 Nougat operating system, a luxury that even high-end phones don't have.
Google, however, confirms the possibility of restarting Project Ara.
