Modular smartphones are coming: we will build our mobile phone the way we want it!

Motorola has unveiled Project Ara, an open-source initiative for developing modular smartphones , aiming to "do with hardware what the Android platform has done with software."modular phone

The company plans to create an ecosystem that will support the development of third-party hardware for individual components.

In other words, someone will be able to upgrade their phone's processor, screen, etc., by purchasing them from different sources.

Motorola will work with Phonebloks, which recently unveiled an equally ambitious plan for moddable smartphones.

The company, which is known to be owned by Google, states that it plans to get involved with the Phonebloks community project during the development process, and to contribute to the implementation of the common idea with its expertise.

Project Ara includes the basic “endo,” the device’s endoskeleton, and various “modules.” Modules can be anything from a new keyboard to a battery or other components.

Motorola will reach out to developers to start building Ara modules and hopes to release the necessary design kit in alpha version this winter.
