Nirsoft: the antivirus shame list

If you use the free tools of Nirsoft, then it is very likely that you have received false positive warnings from some antivirus programs that report that the applications have a malicious character.

Nirsoft has been fighting for a long time to remove its applications from antivirus blacklists, with the risk that they may also be adopted by major browsers.

For example, if Chrome or Firefox blocks Nirsoft's tools, Nirsoft would certainly be destroyed.shame Nirsoft

Nir Sofer, the page owner, changed his applications, but the result still remains the same.

He then decided to further investigate the issue, scanning all his programs on VirusTotal and to discover the antiviruses that produce false positives.

For those who don't know, VirusTotal scans the files you upload to the service with 56 different antivirus engines.

The ranking calculation in the following list by Nir Sofer is simple: each antivirus starts with a score of 100 points. Negative points are awarded for alerts that vary depending on whether it is a generic alert or one that warns about malicious code.

Only 12 out of the 56 antivirus solutions did not report false positives, while the remaining 44 antivirus engines displayed at least one.

The engines with perfect results are: AegisLab, Alibaba, ALYac, ByteHero, ClamAW, Emsisoft, Panda, Qihoo-360, Tencent, Total Defense, VBA32, Zoner.

Many popular antivirus solutions did not have a good rating. TrendMicro, for example, had a score of 67 and 24 alerts, Nod32 had a score of 57 and 26 alerts, Symantec had a score of 71 and 20 alerts, and Malwarebytes got 83 with 11 alerts.

You can see the full post on Nirsoft's blog for more details.

Conclusion

False positives are a major issue for Nirsoft and possibly for other software developers.

The above ranking does not reflect how effective antivirus programs are overall, and at least once we will wonder whether some virus protection mechanisms that we use as reliable are truly reliable in avoiding false positives.
