As we reported yesterday, some Windows 7 users were forced to upgrade to Windows 10, as Windows Update gave them no other option than to restart their computer to begin the installation.
So today the company, with a statement released by Ars, confirms all of the above, stating that it was simply a mistake.
What was the “mistake”?
Basically, the optional upgrade to Windows 10 became mandatory by default, meaning that Windows 7 was automatically downloaded and installed on computers.
The company said that all of this happened completely by accident and that it has already removed the settings for these parameters, giving users the option to install or not install Windows 10.
“As part of our effort to install Windows 10 on existing devices with genuine Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, the upgrade to Windows 10 may appear as an optional update in the Windows Update (WU) control panel. In the recent Windows update, this option was not available by default. This was an error that has been fixed.”
the company reports.
Of course, it's hard to believe that it was just a mistake, especially when you consider that the company has set a goal of installing Windows 10 on a billion devices by 2017.
