The HackEKT Competition is organized by the National Documentation Center with the aim of further innovative utilization and promotion of the open datasets of the repositories of reputable scientific and cultural content that it develops. The five proposals that will be distinguished for their implementation will be awarded cash prizes worth a total of 25,000 euros.

The emblematic repositories and content services that EKT develops within the framework of its institutional role for the collection, documentation and secure storage of the country's reputable content include, among others, the National Archive of Doctoral Theses, the HELIOS Repository of the NHRF, the repository of the Parthenon Frieze, the Repository of the K. Simitis Foundation Archive, the electronic e-publishing platform that hosts over 16 open access scientific journals, and the web portals argo.ekt.gr and openarchives.gr.

This vast volume of content constitutes an extremely important tool for research, education, entertainment and information. The aim of the competition is to highlight innovative ways of searching, navigating and further using the data by individual user communities, such as the research and educational communities.

The #HackEKT Competition (https://saas.ekt.gr/content/contests) is open to participation, but interdisciplinary teams consisting of programmers, librarians, archivists and curators of digital museum collections, who have a good understanding of the operation of digital repositories and libraries and are aware of the needs of individual audiences who use them, are especially invited to participate.

The HackEKT competition includes the following five thematic categories that leverage EKT's open datasets and repositories:

  1. EKT_le@rn: Creation of educational web applications or mobile applications that utilize primary scientific or cultural content and metadata available from EKT repositories, offering new easy-to-use ways of searching and navigating the content.
  2. EKT Cre@tive: Creation of applications that utilize scientific and cultural data in applications related to the creative industry or tourism.
  3. visualizeARGO: Visualization of bibliographic data (data visualization) from the bibliographic catalogs and repositories of the EKT library available through the argo.ekt.gr portal.
  4. RepKPIs: Digital repository software extensions (DSpace 4.x) for the reproduction of multimedia elements, the enrichment of files or the production of statistics related to the repository material and user interaction. These extensions will have the ability to be configured according to the administrator's requirements. The statistics should be available in multiple formats (e.g. Json, xml). At the same time, it should be possible to develop appropriate plugins for the reception and management of the application's statistics from the collectd software and be available through SNMP protocol extensions.
  5. RepSearch: Digital repository software extensions with new user-friendly ways to navigate EKT content and data.

The right to participate in the competition is exclusively reserved for natural persons (not legal entities), regardless of nationality, who reside and operate in Greece, and who meet all the legal requirements for this.

Interested parties can participate in the HackEKT competition either individually or in teams of up to 5 people. Interested parties are invited to carefully study the detailed terms of the competition that follow and submit their proposals/applications electronically by Monday, October 5, 2015 (23.59 Greek time) in accordance with the terms described on the digital platform of the competition https://saas.ekt.gr/content/contests. Participation in the competition implies the unreserved acceptance of all the terms without exception and the relevant commitment of the participants.

The HackEKT competition will select five (5) total winners based on scores, one in each category, who will each receive a cash prize of five thousand (5,000) euros. The prizes will be awarded at a relevant awards ceremony to be held after the end of the competition.

The HackEKT competition is taking place within the framework of Subproject 4 of the Project “Platform for the Provision of Services for the Deposit, Management and Disposal of Open Public Data, Documentation and Digital Content”, which is implemented by the EKT and is part of the Operational Program “Digital Convergence” (ESRF), with the co-financing of Greece and the European Union.
