LibreItalia reports today that the Italian Ministry of Defense will switch word processing software on its computers, adopting LibreOffice, an open source software.
The move comes in a form of collaboration between the Italian Ministry of Defense and LibreItalia.
Sonia Montegiove, President of LibreItalia, and Ruggiero Di Biase, Rear Admiral and General Executive Director of the Automated Information Systems Department of the Italian Ministry of Defense, signed an agreement for a collaboration to adopt the LibreOffice office suite in all the Ministry's offices.
LibreItalia, a non-profit organization, has promised to assist the Ministry of Defense with trainers who will train all employees in the implementation of LibreOffice software starting in October 2015, with online training courses. The entire transition process is expected to be completed by the end of 2016.
“As part of the agreement, the Italian Ministry of National Defense will develop educational content with a series of online training courses for LibreOffice, which is released to the community under a Creative Commons license.
The initiative of the Ministry of National Defense with the choice of the LibreOffice office suite is a very good example of how a Greece that, although bankrupt, still spends a lot of money on similar applications could move forward.
