Europol creates new unit to combat ISIS online

The European law enforcement agency Europol is reportedly creating a new unit to combat Islamic State (IS or ISIS) extremists online.ISIS members Europol

The BBC reports that the new unit is now considered necessary as there are growing concerns about the ability of extremists to use the internet and social media to attract new potential members from Muslim communities in Europe.

Europol officials believe that around 5,000 EU citizens have so far followed the Islamic State in its wars in Iraq and Syria.

Europol is reportedly starting partnerships with social networks to monitor suspicious accounts and identify young people at risk of being recruited by extremists.

The agency also says the new unit will also work to remove accounts that spread ISIS propaganda.

The new task force will start operating next month. Let's see if there will be any results.
