Shiela USB Shield is a free security program for Windows operating systems that protects you from malicious USBs.
Shiela USB Shield is a simple, easy-to-use program that adds another layer of security to your systems. The program takes up almost no memory, and if you set it to run automatically you won't even notice it's running, even if it's active in the background.
USB devices are known to be frequently used to distribute malware. The free Shiela USB Shield software offers real-time protection against threats originating from removable devices that use USB connections.
Among its many protection features is that it locks autorun.inf and the executable files associated with it. It offers write protection options (write permissions) or even completely disabling USB Mass Storage on the system.
Note: If you wish to install the application, you should be aware that it requires elevated privileges (administrator), and that it requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or a later version. If they are not present, an error message will be returned.
Shiela USB Shield runs silently in the background. You will need to check the settings at least once to make sure the application is configured correctly.
The settings are quite extensive and are divided into four tabs.
- Provide the installation folder of the virus scanner you are using or the command that Shiela will use in case of detecting malicious files.
- Choose between automatically fix issues (default), or display warnings. The default option is set to “freeze” infected files.
- Disable USB Mass Storage or change write protection.
- Add file extensions or files that will not be excluded from the analysis.
It is theoretically possible to manually run the application on fixed drives, but we do not recommend it as it is not designed for this.
The Shiela application is compatible with all versions of Windows starting from Windows 2000.
