The Test
During BattleHack, contestants will be challenged to solve a local problem using code.
The ingenuity of participating contestants when developing their codes will be particularly welcome, however, in order to claim victory, they must have taken care to integrate SDK (Software Development Kit) files from Braintree or PayPal and aim for their applications to be for the common good of the local community.
Each standalone application created during the competition will be evaluated based on the quality of its code and the integration of the required API (Application Programming Interface), and not on whether its commercial exploitation is feasible.
The jury of BattleHack Athens 2015 consists of distinguished names in the field, with John Lunn, Senior Global Director of PayPal/Braintree_Dev., stating that he is eager to discover the greatest talents of Greece and the wider region, while at the same time motivating domestic developers.
The winners of BattleHack Athens will win axes, airfare and accommodation for the Global Finals in Silicon Valley, where they will have the opportunity to face as “Top Developers of Greece” the winners from other local BattleHack 2015 events in the grand finals, where the prize will be $100,000.
During 2015, BattleHack competitions will be held in 14 cities around the world, and in addition to Athens, these are the following: Melbourne, Los Angeles, Singapore, Raleigh, London, Tokyo, Berlin, Chicago, Venice, Toronto, New York, Stockholm and Tel Aviv.
Business Support Force
With the BattleHack 2015 series, PayPal and Braintree are investing in enabling the next generation of companies. With both companies having worked with hundreds of thousands of top developers and startups worldwide, this global hackathon is the perfect opportunity to connect with and support the growing developer community.
In addition to the opportunity to win $100,000, BattleHack offers participants unlimited opportunities through their acquaintance with the top hackers in their region, by exchanging, promoting and developing ideas among themselves, as well as by their contact with people in the field, who can help them emerge as the new big hopes in the field of technology and startups. The best proof of this is the extremely successful cases from the previous events.
The BattleHack Hall of Fame
BattleHack 2015 marks the 3rd annual BattleHack event series and it is worth noting that the previous two were huge successes .
In 2013, the Moscow team won the grand prize of $100,000 for the Donate Now, which uses BLE and PayPalto allow anyone, using just their mobile device, to instantly donate to a charity of their choice whenever they feel the need to give, without having to fill out lengthy forms.
In 2014, the Tel Aviv team won the final with AirHop – a “collaborative consumption” app that allows its users to share their server or Wi-Fi access, so that someone without a mobile connection can use the app to “hop” to someone else’s mobile to make a phone call or send an SMS, paying the corresponding fee via PayPal.
That same year, the winning team at the BattleHack in Sydney created a “locker” that allows app users to borrow sportswear and equipment via their mobile phone. The app uses IoT (Internet of Things) technology, which uses a timer to calculate the total rental cost and provides payment via PayPal.
However, it’s not just the global and local winners who enjoy professional support. The best example is the Parmesan from the Moscow competition, which in 2014 received a $50,000 grant from GVA LaunchGurus immediately after the event. Now, their app helps users connect with people returning from abroad and allows customers to ask travelers to bring them food that is unavailable in their home country and reimburse them for their trips.
