Apple's mapping service may not be as popular as Google's equivalent, but that doesn't mean the company has given up.
As reported by the New York Times, Apple has acquired Coherent Navigation, a company that specializes in high-precision GPS devices and software.
Apple told the NYT succinctly :
"Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans."
Meanwhile, the Coherent Navigation website is offline, but the domain name servers point to Apple's servers.
According to MacRumors, some members of the company's staff have been working for Apple since last January.
In anticipation of the next WWDC, it is very likely that Apple will try to introduce a more reliable mapping service.
Since the company stopped working with Google's mapping service (Google Maps), it has acquired many small mapping businesses such as: Pin Drop, Locationary, WifiSLAM, Hopstop, Embark, and Broadmap.
