Specifically, the investigation into the case began after the Hellenic Cybercrime Unit contacted Europol, which reported that Europol, in collaboration with the US authorities (FBI), conducted a targeted operation on an Internet website located abroad, which contained material depicting the sexual abuse of minors.

As it emerged, Greek internet users were involved in the case. For this reason, cooperation between the Cybercrime Directorate and the American authorities (FBI) followed, in order to verify the electronic management traces for the accounts that the perpetrators had created on the aforementioned controversial website.

From the Cyber Crime Directorate a thorough digital investigation and analysis of the case data and evidence was carried out. In this context, after lifting the confidentiality of communications and contacting the responsible internet and telecommunications service providers, the aforementioned actors were identified as administrators of the investigated accounts.

Yesterday morning (6-4-2015), police units conducted formal investigations at the residences mentioned above in Attica and Piraeus.

During the investigations, hundreds of thousands of files (photos and videos) were found on digital storage media – totaling over 1 TB (Terabyte) – of child pornography material, and the perpetrators were arrested in the flagrante delicto.

They were also found and seized in total:

  • five (5) internal computer hard drives and
  • portable computer (laptop).

The seized digital evidence will be sent to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for the necessary laboratory examinations and analyses.

The two (2) detainees, with the case file filed against them, are being taken to the competent Prosecutor's Offices. Any involvement of other Greek users in the controversial website is being investigated.
