Panda Antivirus users had a not-so-pleasant Wednesday. The Spanish security software company released an update that essentially classified components of its program as malware.
What followed was indescribable. Computers running the protection software stopped working, or were quite unstable, or could not access the internet. A Panda spokesperson confirmed the problem.
“A bad update released today [Wednesday] led to the detection and identification of certain system files by the Panda engine as malicious. A replacement update was released immediately afterwards to fix the error and restore the files that had been incorrectly quarantined,” a Panda.
“We currently recommend that you do not reboot your systems. This will allow us to update the system with the modified update.”
The files that appear to be causing the problem are psanmodrep.dll and alertsmanager.dll – two key components of the Panda Antivirus.
If you are using the application, it would be a good idea to follow the company's instructions. Do not turn off your computer until it gets the second update that fixes the problem.
If your computer still does not seem to be responding, you can try the solutions for the different error scenarios that the company has published.
