A hacker who claims to have developed part of the RIG Exploit Kit became unhappy when he did not receive his regular payments for updated versions of the malware, and decided to leak the tool's source code.
Initially, the hacker tried to sell RIG's services on HackForums, a website considered a paradise for script kiddies.
He then wrote to a private underground forum where the administrators banned him, describing him as a fraudster trying to trick members of the blackhat community by trying to sell RIG's services at very high prices.
So the disgruntled hacker uploaded the source code to a content sharing website and created a Twitter account, from where he contacted different security researchers by showing the link to download RIG.
Initially, there was no confirmation that the leaked code was actually the RIG Exploit Kit. However, several researchers confirmed the authenticity of the code, which is “the most recent version of the package.”
The RIG Exploit Kit is a popular browser-based attack tool that can be used to deliver all kinds of malware, from banking Trojans to ransomware with file-encrypting capabilities.
The leak does not include the RIG exploits. For this reason, the researchers who analyzed the Exploit Kit from MalwareTechdecided to make the source code available to the public.
