IBM is investing $3 billion over five years in research and development in the semiconductor, even though the company plans to sell the sector.
IBM is relatively behind in sales and profits in the semiconductor sector, with Intel having a dominant position in the market, and that is why it has been looking for a buyer for this sector since last year.
Losses reach $1.5 billion annually, but that doesn't stop it from investing a large amount.
The $3 billion will fund two separate programsto build smaller and more powerful semiconductors.
Of particular interest is the company's research into new materials in the manufacture of semiconductors, other than silicon.
