Samsung is reportedly ready to launch in the coming months a device that will be worn on the wrist, like a smartwatch, but will be a fully functional phone device .
More specifically, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal, which cites sources within the Korean company, Samsung is designing a watchphone device that will be capable of making phone calls without requiring a connection to a smartphone.
In addition to making phone calls, Samsung's watchphone will be able to take photos, send emails, have GPS, Bluetooth, and a heart rate monitor. The device will run the Tizen operating system , which is developed by Samsung itself in collaboration with Intel.
The company is reportedly in talks with carriers in the United States, South Korea, and Europe to promote the device, with a launch expected between June and July.
Samsung already has smartwatches on the market, with the Gear 2 running Tizen. Sony has also introduced smartwatches . Similar devices are also being designed by companies such as Google and ZTE , and Apple , Samsung's biggest smartphone competitor, is expected to follow suit in the near future
It is worth noting that according to research firm IDC, shipments of wearable devices, including smartwatches, are expected to triple in 2014, exceeding 19 million units, while smartphone sales are expected to increase by 19% to 1.2 billion units.
