AMD announced that it will proceed with the creation of a new class of processors that will combine the features of 64-bit x86 with ARM SoCs, as a result of the SkyBridge program.
This program attempts to marry two different processor architectures, allowing each of the different designs to be used on the same motherboards, with minimal or no changes.
The ultimate goal of the program is to better "prepare" the company for the new products that are going to appear in the coming years. After all, AMD has been experiencing continuous losses in recent years due to the ongoing shrinkage of the processor market for classic processors. At the same time, it is significantly lagging behind Intel, its main competitor.
AMD has not had a presence in the mobile processor market to date, and as it will continue to focus primarily on traditional PCs and servers, it plans to gradually enter this segment of the market through the SkyBridge program.
In addition, the company announced that it has also received a license to manufacture ARM architecture processors from the British company ARM, whose low-power processors are widely used in smartphones, tablets and low-power servers.
