After the announcements of US President Barack Obama regarding the alleged reforms to the surveillance tactics of the National Security Agency on Friday, it was expected that there would be reactions.
The global debate over government surveillance, sparked by the documents leaked by Edward Snowden, seems to have no end. Obama initially (as of August 2013) had promised to enact changes to NSA. Since then, until today, the pressure has escalated. Technology companies, government officials, leaders of other countries, and privacy groups have demanded that Obama immediately make drastic changes to the NSA programs.
When Obama revealed his plan on Friday, reactions escalated. Some described the new measures “significant milestone”, while others accused the American President that during his announcements, he mentioned nothing significant. Nevertheless, the conscience of the American President appears to be calm, since he carried out what he promised. He carried out the reform announcements, and regardless of whether public opinion received them with mockery, relief or restrained optimism, he did his duty.
Of course, we must add that Obama’s reforms will not take effect immediately, and many of them are merely proposals, without specific details on how they could be made feasible.
