Tesco is the UK's largest retailer, as well as one of the largest in the world .
Colin Marsh is a Tesco customer. He recently bought an Apple iPad from his local store for £470. The device was intended as a gift for his two daughters. However , when he opened the box expecting to find the new tablet, he discovered that it contained clay!
Marsh returned the package and asked for a refund. Tesco staff, however, thought he was suspicious and called the police. Two days later, he was called to the police station to give a statement. Marsh told the Telegraph: “I thought they wanted to know what had happened, but they put me in a cell. I was there for three hours because they told me the iPad had been activated in my name.”
He was held for three hours on fraud charges, then released on bail as the police investigation continues. A few weeks later he learned that the stolen iPad had been discovered 200 miles away, in Wales.
Police said that “the iPad was apparently registered in his name, but the investigation showed that Marsh had not committed any offence.” The charge was dropped and his bail was revoked.
Marsh got his money back but the company never apologised, the company said. Tesco finally apologised last week, saying: “We were very disappointed to learn that the product sold to Mr Marsh had been tampered with. We were not aware of this and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused to Mr Marsh.”
