IBM released the 2013 Cyber Security Intelligence Index, an infographic that examines the global landscape of online threats.
According to the report, during a week, an independent online company faces approximately 1,400 attacks and the average number of incidents occurring per week is 1.7.
Most attacks have targeted organizations from the following sectors: manufacturing (26.5%), finance and insurance (20.9%), information and communications (18.7%), health and social services (7.3%), and retail and wholesale (6.6%).
Two of the most common types of attacks, accounting for over 60% of all incidents, are malware attacks and reconnaissance operations.
Half of cyberattacks are opportunistic, 23% of them are part of industrial espionage, terrorism, financial crime or are simply data theft operations.
Dissatisfaction with the employer or job, and social activism are also common motivations.
