It is well known that high-quality lenses cost money, and here comes the saying “you get what you pay for”. High-end lenses, in addition to the best results in photography, also come with features for correcting a photo that for whatever reason does not excite you. But what if you do not have the money for high-end lenses but want to have clear photos with just the press of a button? Could you use a cheap lens and get high-end results? Researchers from the University of British Columbia claim that it is possible.
Their technique was presented at SIGGRAPH 2013, and may one day lead to a software alternative for those who can't afford high-end lenses. For their experiments, they created a handmade lens and then corrected the photos using software they developed. The results are stunning.
