Archaeological excavations in southern Turkey recently found a sculpture of the goddess Aphrodite. Specifically, the head of the statue was found, which is life‑size and made of marble.
Life Science reports that it was discovered near Antioch [Antiochia ad Cragum], on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
Because it had been buried in the ground for hundreds of years, the sculpture is quite damaged.
Its nose and the rest of its face are broken.
The head of Aphrodite is part of an entire statue that displayed the goddess in its entirety.
However, archaeologists have no idea where the rest of the body is. It is suspected that it was destroyed and used by the area's inhabitants hundreds of years ago to make building bricks.
