Three cases of "piracy" of subscription satellite services were identified and investigated by the Economic Police and Cybercrime Prosecution Service

As part of a coordinated police operation in the areas of Corfu, Preveza and Aitoloakarnania, investigations were carried out and a case was filed against three Greek citizens, aged 35, 57 and 39, respectively

The perpetrators were illegally "distributing" a television signal from subscription services to an unknown number of people, resulting in the required monthly subscriptions not being paid to the provider companies

The Economic Police and Cybercrime Prosecution Service identified and investigated three other cases of "piracy" of subscription satellite services, in Corfu and Preveza.

Specifically, within the framework of a coordinated police operation by the Financial Police and Cybercrime Prosecution Service, an investigation was conducted in the above areas and a case was filed for violation of intellectual property legislation and the legislation for the protection of subscription services, against three Greek citizens, aged 35, 57 and 39, respectively.

More specifically, the investigation of the cases began following a lawsuit filed with the Service by an attorney-at-law of a company providing services to electronic media. The lawsuit concerned satellite "piracy" of the services provided by the company, through the illegal distribution of their television signal to a large number of "subscribers".

Specifically, in the first case, a lawful search was carried out the day before yesterday (19-09-2013) by police officers of the Economic Police and Electronic Crime Prosecution Service at the home of the 35-year-old in Corfu. During the search, a network digital satellite receiver connected to the television was found. On two (2) computers, which were also found in the home, a number of files/programs were found, which are used to modify the receivers.

It was also determined that the computer user is also the owner and administrator of a controversial website, through which encrypted decryption keys for foreign satellite packages were shared. Finally, files were found with lists of names of customers who had purchased illegal subscriptions, the number of which is at least 40.

During the investigation, the following were found and seized:

  • One (1) network digital satellite receiver,
  • three (3) internal hard drives,
  • one (1) laptop,
  • one (1) external portable drive

In the second case, a police and digital investigation was carried out, as well as an Order and Decree issued to lift the confidentiality of internet communications.

In addition, a legal search was conducted yesterday (20-09-2013) at the home of the 57-year-old in Preveza, where two (2) network digital satellite receivers connected to the television were found, which were in operation during the search. A number of files/programs were found on the computer found inside the home, which are used to modify the receivers.

During the investigation, the following were found and seized:

  • Two (2) network digital satellite receivers,
  • one (1) internal hard drive and
  • two (2) external storage drives

In the third case, a legal search was carried out on 18-09-2013 at the 39-year-old's store in Thermo, Aitoloakarnania, where one (1) hard drive was found and seized.

The seized digital evidence, in both cases, was sent to forensic laboratories for the necessary laboratory tests, while the criminal cases filed against the above will be submitted to the competent Prosecutors
