Google Defaced in Palestine

Palestinian hackers managed to distort the Google Maps that appears in Palestine. The perpetrators were apparently unhappy with the fact that Google Maps displays Palestine as Israel.

"Uncle Google, we say hello from Palestine so you remember that it is not the country that Google Maps as Israel. It is called Palestine," the hackers state on the defaced website.

And they continued: “Question: What would happen if we changed the title of the country of Israel to Palestine on Google maps! There would be a revolution.”

It's worth noting that Google hasn't actually been hacked. Palestinian hackers attacked the company that hosts the DNS and were able to redirect the Google.ps domain to their own page. The hackers managed to change Google's nameservers to their own omar.genious.net and hamza.genious.net.

Genious Communications is a provider hosted in Morocco.

Currently, Google.ps is working properly.

Meanwhile, Google issued the following statement to ZDNet: “Some users visiting the Google.ps page are being redirected to a different website. Google services for the Google.ps domain have not been hacked. We are in contact with the company responsible for managing this domain to resolve the issue.”
