A swarm of 30,000 bees attacked a couple in Pantengo, North Texas, America, stung them 200 times and managed to kill two ponies that were on the farm, according to a news report by the star-telegram.
For the past few weeks, Kristen Beauregard had noticed bees near her home and had tried in vain to get rid of them.
On Wednesday night, while Beauregard was training one of her two miniature horses, a Shetland pony, thousands of angry bees attacked her, her boyfriend and the two horses. Suddenly, a dark cloud of bees appeared, the horse began jumping and kicking and she felt a stinging sensation all over her body. When her efforts to chase the bees failed, she jumped into the pool and the pony followed her. Beauregard was stung about 200 times and her boyfriend 50. The two horses were stung so badly that they did not survive.
“They were chasing us and following us everywhere,” he said. “Everything became dark, as if it was night because of the many bees. We dived into the pool to save ourselves, but every time we stuck our heads out for air, they attacked us and covered us. We were trying to breathe and at the same time we felt a stinging sensation in our face and nose… It was like a bad movie.”
The couple do not know what caused the swarm of bees – estimated to number around 30,000 – to leave the hive and attack. The bees are being examined by experts to see if they are Africanized bees , also known as “killer bees” for their aggressive behavior.
She finally made it home, with bees flying behind her and crashing into the windows. Terrified, they watched as the horses ran wildly across the yard, rubbing themselves against the bushes to chase the bees away and stumbling. Her friend called 911 for help.
The firefighters who headed to the yard sprayed foam to clear the clouds of bees. Despite first aid to the horses, with strong doses of antihistamine, the two ponies died.
In addition to the horses, the bees killed five chickens. A sixth has stingers all over its body and its eyes were swollen shut. The couple's dog was stung several times.
