The US House of Representatives voted against the amendment, which would have limited the reach of the NSA.
The vote on the Amash was 205 votes in favor to 217 votes against in the House, meaning the NSA can continue to collect data from phones and the internet.
The goal of the Amash amendment was to limit the NSA 's surveillance programs . But all indications are that the NSA will continue its work, this time with the blessings of the House of Representatives.
Before the vote, NSA leaders called an emergency meeting of Congress in an effort to explain the importance of voting against the amendment. Similarly, the White House expressed sympathy for the continuation of the Secret Service programs.
