Bolivia grants asylum to Edward Snowden

moralsEvo Morales, President of Bolivia, announced that he is offering asylum to Edward Snowden, during a speech on Saturday.

“As a sign of protest, we want to tell Europeans and Americans that we will grant asylum to the US citizen who is being persecuted by his compatriots. We are not afraid,” Morales said, as reported by El Comercio.

He also said that if Snowden makes a formal request, he will be granted asylum. This means that Bolivia has not yet received the faxed requests from Snowden.

Morales stressed that Snowden is being prosecuted for denouncing the United States government for spying.

Venezuela and Nicaragua have already indicated their intention to support Snowden by offering him asylum.

According to Wikileaks, Snowden has so far submitted asylum applications to 27 countries and has rejected one, that of the Russian government, when President Vladimir Putin stated that they would grant him asylum only if he stopped leaking files and making statements that expose the US.
