Facebook - owned Instagram is urging its users to change their passwords because it says their accounts “may have been compromised.” Matt Navarra of The Next Web was one of the 130 million Instagram users who received an email like the one described above.
As first reported by GigaOm, the service has been under attack in recent hours by a large wave of spam – seemingly featuring a company promoting a “miracle” fruit diet. The fruits are posted on unsuspecting users’ profiles by changing the profile URLs to the address of the website that is launching the spam campaign.
The images have not yet been investigated for malicious intent and are affecting users who found them on their profiles, but several Instagrammers are sending messages on Twitter that the website is asking them to change their password, or that their account has been hacked:
