High-ranking government officials and lawmakers from the United Kingdom are considering the possibility of allowing scientists to create babies that will have three genetic parents.
In other words, researchers from the United Kingdom could soon, if given the green light, “construct” babies whose DNA would not come from two, but from three parents.
Experts supporting the project say that the in vitro fertilization (IVF)will allow them to "create" babies that will be safe from various diseases.
However, skeptics argue that the technique could one day be used to create so-called designer babies, and therefore should be banned.
The website Live Science explains that, in order to create a baby with DNA from three parents, researchers need to replace the defective mitochondrial DNA with a healthy sample already collected from a female donor.
