For the last two decades of his life, Steve Jobs was a Mercedes man. But in the 1980s, Steve Jobs was a Porsche man. He gave a gift to a salesman for selling the most Macs in the United States, and Apple even sponsored a Porsche 935 K3 to compete in an endurance race.
The car had 800 horsepower, was a six-cylinder, twin-charged boxer engine. The drivers of the car were Allan Moffat, Bobby Rahal, and Bob Garretson, who were part of Dick Barbour's team.
With Apple as a sponsor, a killer car and legendary drivers, what could go wrong with the first iCar?
And yet Dick Barbour's team was forced to withdraw from the 24-hour endurance race with 13 hours to go. The reason? A piston melted. After that, it ran a few more times, but didn't fare so well, taking 7th and 3rd place in the next two races.
However, the iCar idea is still alive. Someone built a knockoff of the Apple Prosche and it still runs on some European tracks today.
