A team of researchers working with Newcastle University recently published that, according to the latest studies they have done, the kilo has gained weight and that they should be forced to go on a diet as soon as possible.
The IPK (The International Standard Kilogram) has gained several tens of micrograms, and the fact may affect all other measurements of mass.
“[…] Mass is a fundamental unit and this very small change is significant as the impact of increasing weight even in a small variation will have a global impact,” say the experts who studied the subject.
“There are cases of international trade in high-quality materials – or waste – where every microgram must be taken into account,” they added.
Apparently, the original kilogram has gained weight because, over time, various impurities have settled on its surface. Scientists hope that, once the impurities are removed, the kilogram will regain its usual weight.
