Seagate launches multiple 10TB hard drives for consumers, professional product lines
Seagate today announced the world's highest-capacity hard drive for desktop users, with the introduction of a new portfolio of high-capacity 10TB hard drives.
First, the Barracuda Pro drives are 3.5-inch products available in capacities up to 10TB. The Barracuda Pro offers a sustained transfer speed of 220MB/s, a 300TB/year write limit (in 24×7 operation). It also packs 10TB at 7200 RPM for excellent performance and includes energy to help keep operating costs low, as well as a 5-year warranty.
The Barracuda Pro 10TB drive is not based on shingled Magnetic Recording and does not appear to use helium. It uses Conventional Magnetic Recording, which means it will not suffer from performance failure when writing data. Also, the conventional Barracuda Pro does not include any NAND flash and its DRAM (now up to 256MB for the 10TB drives) has been increased to keep up with the increased storage capabilities.
During seek, the drive consumes just 6.8 watts and during idle 4.5 watts, making it truly low-power by hard drive standards, according to Seagate. The new 10TB Barracuda Pro has a list price of $534.99.
Seagate also announced two other models that cost less but aren't aimed at desktops: the 10TB IronWolf for NAS (network attached storage) applications and costs $469.99, and the 10TB Skyhawk processor for video surveillance use that costs $459.99. Both models are expected to ship with a three-year warranty. Furthermore, the Barracuda Pro, IronWolf, and Skyhawk will only be available with SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) interfaces.
