WP Engine introduces Two-Factor Authentication

WP Engine, which delivers amazing digital experiences for websites and apps built on WordPress, on Monday announced the introduction of two-factor authentication for the User Portal, adding an extra layer of security for all of its managed hosting customers. This free opt-in feature will be available to all 42,000 WP Engine customers effectively and immediately.

WP Engine introduces Two-Factor Authentication

Recognizing that businesses need more sophisticated solutions to protect their digital identities, WP Engine is launching Two-Factor Authentication to further enhance the multiple security features of its platform and services. Two-factor authentication helps prevent unauthorized third partiesfrom gaining access to customers’ websites and potentially harming their business. Additionally, this feature ensures that even if a user’s password is compromised, their account remains secure as the second factor remains out of reach for the attacker.

“Because our customers’ businesses are live online, security has always been a major focus for WP Engine. Today, we’re taking further steps to ensure sites and data are secure, without compromising our high-quality services and operations,” said Eric Murphy, WP Engine’s Director of Security. “We’re excited to release this new feature for our customers, as two-factor authentication gives site administrators peace of mind by allowing privileged users to gain access while keeping unauthorized intruders out. We want to worry about security so our customers don’t have to.”

Two-factor authentication requires a second factor (in addition to a password) to gain access to your account. With this implementation, a user attempting to log in to their managed WP Engine account will not only have to enter their password, but will also have to enter a generated code that is displayed to them and changes every 30 seconds, in order to gain access to the User Portal. WP Engine leverages the Google Authenticator for two-factor authentication for the websites it hosts.

Founded in 2010, WP Engine has grown alongside WordPress, the most popular content management system on the Internet. WordPress, introduced 12 years ago, now powers nearly a quarter (23 percent) of the web. WP Engine currently powers over 300,000 websites and apps in 128 countries, delivering the fastest, most reliable, and most secure WordPress experience.
