Mobile-friendly websites will now rank higher in Google search results

Google announced that, starting in May, its search ranking algorithm will provide an additional boost to the visibility of websites that are mobile-friendly.

The company had already started ranking mobile-friendly websites higher in the search engine since April 2015.

The new update re-modifies the ranking algorithm so that responsive websites receive even more push and visibility than before.

Websites that haven't been updated and aren't geared towards mobile users won't be relegated to the depths of the web. Google says that good content is still good content, and based on user search queries, non-mobile-friendly websites will still have a chance to rank well in search results if they provide relevant and quality content.

However, the best scenario would be to upgrade these websites so that they have a "responsive design" and their content adapts to all types of devices.

There are several guidelines available on creating mobile-friendly websites, such as Web Fundamentals, Principles of Site Design, and Webmaster Mobile Guide. Additionally, a good tool for checking the friendliness of a website towards mobile devices is Google's Mobile-Friendly Test.
